Implementation Focused

We don't just develop Behaviour Support Plans. We support teams to put strategies into practice and review what is working.

What is Positive Behaviour Support?

Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) is a person-centred, evidence-informed approach that focuses on understanding behaviour, improving quality of life and reducing the use of restrictive practices for people with disability.

At Autism Abilities, we recognise that all behaviour is communication. When a person displays behaviours of concern, it can be a sign that an underlying need is not being understood or met.

Our Approach to Positive Behaviour Support

We work alongside participants, families and support teams to understand why behaviours of concern are occurring and develop practical strategies that respond to the person’s individual needs.

While NDIS requirements guide the development of Behaviour Support Plans, we believe the real impact happens through implementation. Our support doesn’t end when the plan is written.

Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at hello@autismabilities.com.au if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Yes. If you don't currently have Positive Behaviour Support funding, our team can discuss completing a funding request report to provide supporting evidence to the NDIS.

The report generally requires approximately 15 hours to complete, and the information-gathering process can be completed remotely, so an in-person appointment is not necessarily required.

Depending on your individual plan and available funding, the assessment/report may be able to be claimed from an appropriate Capacity Building budget. We will confirm this with you before commencing, as Capacity Building categories can be stated and cannot always be used interchangeably.

The NDIS confirms that reports and recommendations from providers can form part of the evidence considered when determining whether Behaviour Support should be included in a participant's plan.

We provide Positive Behaviour Support across Northern, Western, Eastern, South-Eastern and Inner Melbourne, as well as via telehealth.

Practitioner availability can vary by location. If your area isn’t listed, please contact our team — we’ll be happy to discuss your location and see how we may be able to support you.

A Behaviour Support Plan should lead to meaningful improvements in everyday life, with strategies that are practical and regularly reviewed. Your practitioner should work collaboratively with you and your support team, monitor progress and adapt strategies when needed.

If you're not seeing progress, feel unsupported or your plan isn't being actively implemented and reviewed, it may be worth discussing your concerns or considering another provider.

Yes. While Autism Abilities has extensive experience supporting autistic and neurodivergent people, our Positive Behaviour Support services are not limited to participants with an autism diagnosis. We support children, adolescents and adults with a range of disabilities and individual support needs.

Our approach is tailored to each person, focusing on their individual strengths, needs, communication and goals.

Yes. Working collaboratively with the people who support the participant is an important part of Positive Behaviour Support.Depending on the participant’s needs, our practitioners may work alongside families, carers, support workers, schools, day services and other professionals involved in their support.

This collaboration helps everyone understand the Behaviour Support Plan and put strategies into practice consistently across everyday environments. Our goal is not simply to develop a plan, but to support its implementation in everyday life.

Our Behaviour Support Practitioners provide practical training and coaching to help families, carers and support workers understand the Behaviour Support Plan and confidently use strategies in everyday situations.

Training is tailored to the person and can include modelling strategies, working through real-life situations and ongoing coaching to review and adapt what is working.
