The main goal of speech pathology is to maximise a person’s ability to communicate to their highest potential in their everyday life. It is concerned with all matters relating to speech, language, communication and swallowing.
Speech pathology can be beneficial for autistic people who may be experiencing difficulties with various aspects of communication. For example, having trouble with social communication skills; differences between expressive and receptive language abilities; being non-speaking etc.
Speech pathologists at Autism Abilities work with people of all ages and abilities. Some of the things they can help with include:
· Expressive language (verbal and written)
· Receptive language (understanding)
· Social skills
· Non-verbal communication (facial expressions, gesture, body language)
· Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC) – any form of communication other than speech (e.g. picture symbols, sign language, computer aids/apps).
They use a variety of therapeutic approaches and techniques as required such as:
· Expressive language programs
· Receptive language programs
· Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC)
· Individual therapy
· Group therapy
· Social skills programs
· Oral motor exercises
· Eating, drinking and swallowing management
· Advice, support and training
Therapy plans are tailored to your specific needs and abilities and are constantly evaluated to ensure their efficiency and relevance.
Funding for Speech Pathology is listed as 'Improved Daily Living' (CB Daily) in your NDIS plan.
Autism Abilities is an NDIS registered service therefore can provide support to agency, plan and/or self managed NDIS participants.
The current hourly rate for Speech Pathology is $193.99 per hour. This is an accordance with current NDIS pricing arrangements (as of 1 July 2024). Travel costs will also be applied for home or community based appointments.
