What is a Functional Behaviour Assessment (FBA)?

A Functional Behaviour Assessment (FBA) is a comprehensive, person-centred assessment that helps us understand the underlying reasons for behaviours of concern. Rather than simply focusing on reducing behaviours, we explore the person's individual needs, strengths, communication style, environment and experiences to identify what may be contributing to their behaviour.

What does a FBA involve?

  • Getting to know the person – understanding their strengths, interests, preferences, communication style and support needs.
  • Listening to those who know them best – working alongside the individual, their family, carers and support team.
  • Understanding the behaviour – exploring when, where and why behaviours occur, including potential triggers, unmet needs and environmental influences.
  • Identifying the function of behaviour – understanding what the person may be communicating, seeking, accessing or avoiding through their behaviour.
  • Developing practical recommendations – identifying proactive strategies, environmental adjustments and supports that address underlying needs and improve quality of life.

What happens after the assessment?

The findings of the FBA provide the foundation for developing an individualised Positive Behaviour Support Plan.

This plan focuses on practical, meaningful strategies that help you and your support network to:

  • Better understand and respond to your needs.
  • Build communication, emotional regulation and everyday living skills.
  • Reduce distress and behaviours of concern.
  • Increase choice, independence and participation.
  • Create supportive, predictable and inclusive environments.
  • Improve overall wellbeing and quality of life.

Our Approach

At Autism Abilities, we understand that every person is unique. Our assessments are grounded in respect, dignity and a commitment to understanding the whole person, not just their behaviour.

Our goal isn't simply to change behaviour. It's to understand what a person needs, empower those supporting them, and create meaningful, lasting improvements in quality of life.
