Sometimes, the biggest breakthroughs begin with a single moment of feeling understood.
Every participant's journey is different, and meaningful progress often comes in ways we don't expect.
When this participant arrived for their Positive Behaviour Support session, they were feeling highly overwhelmed. It was clear they were trying to regulate in the ways that felt most familiar and comfortable to them, making it difficult to engage or communicate.
Rather than expecting immediate participation, our PBS Practitioner, Caitlin, recognised that what was needed most was patience, understanding, and a calm, supportive environment.
Caitlin gently encouraged the participant to slow things down at their own pace. Together, they began with simple seated stretches and focused breathing before moving on to a favourite jigsaw puzzle—an activity that felt familiar, enjoyable, and comforting.
As they worked together, the participant continued repeating words and phrases from favourite television shows. Caitlin allowed the conversation to unfold naturally, following the participant's lead and creating space for communication without pressure.
Sometimes, feeling safe is what allows someone to find their voice.
During the session, something remarkable happened.
For the first time, the participant was able to clearly communicate what had been bothering them.
While it may have seemed like a small moment to others, it represented a significant breakthrough—one that created new opportunities to better understand the participant's needs and how they could be supported moving forward.
Meaningful progress isn't always loud. Sometimes, it's found in a single conversation.
Following the session, Caitlin met with the participant's mother to reflect on what had been learnt together.
They discussed practical strategies that could support emotional regulation within the home, helping create a consistent approach between therapy sessions and everyday family life.
Working alongside families is an important part of how we support participants to build confidence, communication, and meaningful progress over time.
Every participant communicates in their own way and at their own pace.
This story is a reminder that progress doesn't always come from having the right answers—it often begins with creating the right environment for someone to feel safe enough to express themselves.
At Autism Abilities, we're privileged to work alongside participants and their families, celebrating every breakthrough, every milestone, and every moment that brings new understanding.
