PARTICIPANT STORIES

Finding the Way Back to What Matters

Sometimes, the most meaningful journeys are the ones that bring us back to the people and places we love.

Every participant's journey is different, and meaningful progress often happens one step at a time.

When this participant first started Positive Behaviour Support, life felt incredibly challenging. Relationships with family had broken down, daily life was difficult to manage, and additional supports were needed to help keep them safe.

Rather than focusing only on behaviours, our PBS Practitioner, Brooke, took the time to build a genuine relationship based on trust, respect, and understanding. Together, they created a safe space where the participant could reflect, learn new skills, and work towards the future they wanted.

Creating a Foundation for Change

Brooke met with the participant every week, often taking walks together. These walks became more than just part of a session—they created a comfortable space to talk openly, reflect on challenges, and explore new ways of responding to difficult situations.

Together, they worked on emotional regulation, communication, distress tolerance, and understanding different perspectives. As confidence grew, the participant also built stronger relationships with their support workers, creating a more consistent and supportive network around them.

Meaningful progress didn't happen overnight, but with patience, trust, and ongoing support, each small step helped build the next.

When Confidence Created New Opportunities

Over the following two years, remarkable progress began to unfold.

The participant became more independent in managing everyday responsibilities, and several restrictive supports that were once necessary were no longer required.

They achieved important personal milestones, including getting their driver's licence, completing their RSA qualification, joining a local football team, and actively looking for employment.

Each achievement represented more than reaching a goal—it reflected growing confidence, greater independence, and the opportunity to participate more fully in everyday life.

Reconnecting With Family

Perhaps the most meaningful change happened beyond the therapy sessions.

Over time, the participant rebuilt a warm and positive relationship with their parents and sibling. They began spending weekends together again, attending football games, and creating new memories as a family.

For Brooke, seeing these relationships strengthen was a powerful reminder that Positive Behaviour Support isn't just about developing skills—it's about helping people live meaningful lives and strengthen the connections that matter most.

Looking Ahead With Confidence

Today, the participant is described as kind, respectful, and thoughtful, with a genuine desire to contribute positively to those around them.

Their journey is a reminder that meaningful progress doesn't always happen all at once. With the right support, trusting relationships, and opportunities to grow, people can build confidence, regain independence, reconnect with their community, and create the future they want for themselves.

At Autism Abilities, we're privileged to walk alongside participants of all ages and their support teams, celebrating every milestone—big or small—and helping people live a personally meaningful life.
